What is an Application Server?
An Application server is a Software Program that supports and efficiently executes the procedures, functions, routines, subroutines, subprograms and scripts that are used in the development of an application. It is a Software Framework having support for application’s GUI, Business Logic, Database server etc. Common examples are:

- JBoss (Red Hat)
- WebLogic Server (Oracle)
What is Localhost?
Localhost means address of the current computer system. Localhost is a reserved domain name. if you want to find the IP address of your localhost; go to command prompt (Windows + R, write cmd) & type ipconfig. Press enter.
What is RAD?
Rational Application Developer is an integrated development environment(IDE) that contains specialized wizards, editors, and validators for a variety of technologies: helps Java developers rapidly design, develop, assemble, test, profile and deploy high quality Java/Java EE, Portal, Web/Web 2.0, OSGi, Web services and SOA applications.
RAD Versions and Releases:
In 2003, IBM acquired Rational Software and a year later launched Rational Application Developer version 6.0 (RAD 6.0). Subsequently they launched:
- RAD 7.0
- RAD 7.5
- RAD 8.0
The latest version of Rational Application Developer is Version 8.0, which was released in August 2010.

Let us check how we can create Websphere Application Server v6.1 @ localhost in IBM RAD 7.5
Prerequisite: IBM RAD 7.5 installed.
Step1: Open IBM RAD 7.5
Launch Websphere RAD. You may find the following screen of RAD (IDE) after the initial introductory page.
Step2: Right click at Lower section as seen in the following Screen Shot:
- You may find tabs NEW-Server as shown below.
- Click on Server.
- A window may Pop-Up.
Step4: Select the webSphere Profile Name. Click Next.
Step5: Click Next.
Step6: Click Finish.
If everything goes fine, Perhaps you’ve created your 1st WebSphere Application Server v6.1 @ localhost in IBM RAD 7.5.
The creation of WebSphere Application Server v6.1 @ localhost is same in all the other versions of IBM RAD i.e. RAD 6.0,RAD 7.0 and RAD 8.0.
